Arte Reina Sofia Madrid
The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is one of Madrid's many museum treasures. Housing contemporary, 20th Century art, the museum was opened in 1992 to replace the original Museum of Contemporary Art. The collection housed in this museum is superb, and provides a nice contrast to the older works displayed in the Museo del Prado.
Picasso's Guernica is the starring attraction of the museum, his agonizing masterpiece depicting the horrors of the Nazi bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. This is one of the most famous pieces of contemporary art in the world, and is nothing short of breathtaking when seen up close. Many of Picasso's other works are displayed here as well, including some important pieces from his Blue period.
Catalan artist Salvador Dali is also featured in this museum. The lovely Girl in the Window is one of his better known works, painted when he was only twenty, and before the surrealist movement began to heavily influence his art. The Cubist Self Portrait is also displayed here, as is his Portrait of Luis Bunuel, a surrealist artist and longtime friend of Dali. Bunuel's works are also included in the museum's collection.
The dark images of Solana are on display here, as is the cubist genius of Juan Gris. Painter Miro is well represented with works here spanning his entire career. Other artists whose works are displayed in the Reina Sofia include Lipchitz, Man Ray, Arp, Mallo, Calder, Arroyo, Soto and Judd.
